Anemia is a blood disorder that is commonly related to iron deficiency. There are many types of anemia, and each one of them has a different cause. Let’s have a look at the most common types of anemia.
Anemia: A blood disorder
Anemia is a blood disorder where there is a shortage of red blood cells. The red blood cells are responsible for supplying oxygen to various organs. A shortage of red blood cells can cause an oxygen shortage leading to various symptoms.
Anemia is diagnosed by a blood test where the hemoglobin count in blood is taken. A normal hemoglobin count for men is 13.5 grams per 100 ml, and for women, it is 12 grams per 100 ml. Anything less than this would be treated as anemia. Treating anemia is important to prevent complications. The treatment to be given is based on the type of anemia that a person has.
Iron deficiency anemia
This is one of the most common types of anemia. This is a form of anemia that occurs due to a lack of iron in the blood. This can be due to insufficient iron in the diet or can be due to blood loss (as in periods). Women are more prone to this type of anemia.
Consuming foods rich in iron like leafy greens, beans, fortified cereals, and whole-grain are recommended. Iron supplements may be needed for some patients.
Sickle cell anemia
This is a form of anemia that affects the shape of the red blood cells. The RBCs would be sickle-shaped, and as a result, it causes oxygen shortage and may even lead to a stroke. This is usually an inherited condition.
This type of anemia cannot be cured. The symptoms need to be managed through medications. A stem cell transplant is an option for advanced cases.
Vitamin deficiency anemia
This form of anemia occurs due to a deficiency of Vitamin C and B12. The symptoms of this anemia are usually found only when the deficiency increases. Treatment is by including foods rich in vitamins and minerals. Vitamin and mineral supplements are also prescribed.
Aplastic anemia
This is a serious condition and occurs when the production of blood cells stops. It is an autoimmune disease. In some people, this condition develops because of cancer. Immediate treatment is needed to prevent severe symptoms.
Medications can help treat this condition. Blood transfusion and stem cell transplant may be needed in advanced cases.
Thalassemia
Thalassemia is a genetic condition that is usually inherited. In most people, it causes mild symptoms that may not even need treatment. In some people, the symptoms can be severe and may lead to complications.
Treatment for thalassemia is through the use of medications, blood transfusion, and stem cell transplant (for severe cases).
The above-mentioned common types of anemia would have helped you understand more about anemia. These conditions need immediate treatment. If left untreated, this condition can lead to health complications.
