Gout is caused due to the accumulation of uric acid crystals around the joints. While uric acid is naturally present in the body’s tissues, eating foods with high purine content can lead to an increase in uric acid levels, causing gout. Therefore, foods rich in purine need to be avoided by those suffering from gout.
Here is a list of foods that aggravate gout.
Red meats
Those suffering from this condition should choose white meat over red meats as they are one of the foods that aggravate gout. Even when it comes to red meats, certain varieties, like beef and pork, are better than lamb. Another kind of meat to avoid is organ meats. Sweetbreads, tripe, liver, kidney, etc. are rich in purine and can increase gout symptoms.
Seafood
Certain types of seafood are among the foods that aggravate gout. If you are suffering from this condition, it is better to avoid scallops, shrimps, mussels, salmon, anchovies, trout, sardines, crab, and a few other kinds of seafood. However, since salmon, mackerel, etc. come packed with nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, it is better to keep them in your diet but in moderation. You can also substitute salmon for fish like cod or sole that have a lower purine content or eat it with certain purine-lowering foods like lemon juice that can help neutralize uric acid.
Alcohol
One of the worst foods that aggravate gout is alcohol. A study conducted by the Boston University School of Medicine concludes that the consumption of wine, spirits, and beer was linked to an increased risk of getting gout. Beer is perhaps the worst kind of liquor for gout patients. It increases the levels of uric acid in the body, leading to impaired kidneys. Experts recommend drinking small servings of alcohol if needed. During a flare-up, it is best to abstain from it completely.
Caffeine
Caffeine is believed to increase the uric acid levels in the blood and must be avoided by gout patients. Foods that aggravate gout and are rich in caffeine include coffee, tea, sodas, energy drinks, and chocolate. Coffee can still be consumed in moderation.Some studies suggest that drinking less than four cups of coffee can help manage gout. But sugary drinks and sodas must be avoided at all costs.
Sugary drinks
Not only do sugary drinks contain caffeine that is linked to high uric acid levels, but it is also packed with artificial sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup. These drinks can be doubly harmful as they raise your uric acid levels and contribute to weight gain. A study conducted in 2010 showed that those with an excess of fructose in their diet were more susceptible to gout.
Purine-rich vegetables
While vegetables are generally healthy due to their high vitamin, mineral, and fiber content, those suffering from gout should avoid certain kinds with high purine levels. Asparagus, beans, spinach, peas, mushrooms, cauliflower, are some vegetables that may contribute to the development of uric acid in the body and must be avoided.
