Plastic surgery is a procedure in which the human body is surgically altered, reconstructed, or restored after an injury or for aesthetic reasons. Plastic surgery is of two types: reconstructive and cosmetic. The former aims to reconstruct a part of the person’s body and improve its functioning, while the latter aims at providing a change in appearance according to that the patient desires. Based on how far the procedure penetrates the body, plastic surgery can be classified into invasive, moderately invasive, minimally invasive, and non-invasive.
Let’s look at a few plastic surgery trends that are invasive.
Rhytidectomy
Rhytidectomy, which is commonly called a facelift, is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure in which a person’s facial appearance is altered. This type of plastic surgery involves the removal of excess skin on the face, followed by redraping it on the patient’s face and neck. Facelifts are done under general anesthesia and are one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries.
This is one of the plastic surgery trends that are invasive, and it can be accompanied by both psychological and physical complications. Also, the risk of developing these complications is higher if the patient has diabetes or hypertension, or they smoke.
Liposuction
Liposuction involves the removal of fat from particular parts of the body, like the hips, thighs, butt, abdomen, neck, and arms. It is also called lipoplasty and body contouring, and it can also be used for breast reduction and the treatment of gynecomastia.
Post lipoplasty, the skin appears smooth and tight if one has good skin elasticity and tone. However, if the skin has poor elasticity, one may end up with loose skin.
People with conditions like restricted blood flow, coronary heart disease, weak immune system, and diabetes cannot get liposuction, as these conditions can complicate the surgery.
Rhinoplasty
A surgical procedure that changes the appearance of the nose, rhinoplasty can also be done to improve the functioning of the nose (mostly to improve breathing). It can also be performed to repair deformities due to an injury, to alleviate certain breathing difficulties, or to correct a birth defect.
The risks of performing rhinoplasty include bleeding, difficulty breathing, scarring, permanent numbness at the site of surgery, infection, and an adverse reaction to the anesthesia administered before the surgery.
Certain precautions need to be followed after surgery to avoid bleeding:
- Blowing the nose too much
- Brushing the teeth vigorously
- Jogging and exercising
- Eating low-fiber foods
- Wearing clothes that need to be tugged through the head and might accidentally rub against the nose.
Abdominoplasty
Also known as a tummy tuck, this is one of the cosmetic plastic surgery trends that are invasive. It is used to remove loose or excess skin on the abdomen, and it helps make the stomach appear thinner and more firm. This procedure tightens the muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall by surgically removing excess fat and skin.
Abdominoplasty carries the risk of being fatal, and it can cause complications like cardiac and pulmonary complications, infections, thrombosis, and blood clots.
